Phila. High School Hockey Taking Off

First Philly Parade In 20 Years

The Philadelphia area had its first championship parade in 20 years this spring when the Penncrest High School hockey team was honored.

The parade was to honor the Penncrest Lions, who won the Pennsylvania State Cup and the Flyers Cup. It was the school's first state championship in its history.

If you have never been to a hockey championship parade you are missing one of sports greatest moments, especially in Philadelphia.

The Flyers began the Philadelphia championship parade tradition after winning the l974 and 1975 Stanley Cups. They were followed by parades for the Philadelphia Phillies in 1980 and the Philadelphia 76ers in 1983. Villanova University was the last parade in 1985, winning the NCAA basketball championship.

The Lions had a great run. In their final 32 games this season, they lost just once to AAA Malvern Prep, going 26-1-5.

The parade was covered by the Philadelphia Inquirer and Delaware County Daily Times.
