Weighty Matter

After compiling a list of all players who have attended a Flyers training camp (found here), it's possible to look at the highs and lows, plus trends

Here are a pair of charts looking at the trends of player size ...

Average Weight of Players Attending Training Camp (in pounds)

Average Height of Players Attending Training Camp (in inches)

The size of players steadily increased for the first 6 or 7 years. Then the team's success stabilized the roster, so there wasn't much change in player size during that time. Then there were some peaks and valleys, but a steady increase until 1997, at which time for the Flyers, the player's size maxed out.

Looking back at that first training camp, there was only one player over 200 lbs - John Miszuk, at just 202 lbs. There were just 3 players over 6'1" - Gary Dornhoefer, Paul Jackson and Jacques Paquin, all at 6'2". The average player at that 1997 training camp was 6'2.1" and 204.4 lbs - taller and heavier than the tallest and heaviest player at that first training camp.

The average in 1967 was 5'10.4" and 177.2 lbs. In 2007 this average stood at 6'1.1" and 200.5 lbs.

The were 4 players who share the mark as the lighest player to attend a Flyers' training camp at 150 pounds - Michel Belhumeur, Doug Melvin, John Paris and Steve Tsujiura.

The heaviest player was more than 100 pounds heavier - Martin Grenier, who attended the 2006 training camp, weighing 255 pounds.

The tallest player was Chris McAllister at 6'8" while Steve Tsujiura and Robbie Moore were the shortest at 5'5".

The "densest" player (in terms of weight per inch - not intelligence) was the 6'5" 255 lbs Marin Grenier (3.31 lbs/inch). The skinniest was the 5'10" 150 lbs Michel Belhumeur, 1969-version. Belhumeur would beef-up at subsequent training camps weighing 160 and 175 pounds.
