Flyers' new ad campaign packs punch

By Kevin Mulligan - philly.com
The Flyers' new radio advertising campaign hits you in the ear like a Jeremy Roenick slap shot. The commercial doesn't feature Simon Gagne or Roenick or Mark Recchi or exciting offense. Instead, it hypes fighting and rough stuff and spotlights, of all people, Donald Brashear beating up on opponents and drilling opponents into the boards. The spot finishes with a call of Tie Domi being checked into the bench area. The radio ads are reminiscent of the Broad Street Bullies days and have caused a little buzz. Dave Coskey, Comcast-Spectacor's marketing president, told me that fighting and fisticuffs will not be the focus of the Flyers' campaign. Just so happens, he said, those radio spots were the first to make air. The TV commercials feature coach Ken Hitchcock talking about his team making the Wachovia Center "an intimidating place" for visiting teams. I swear it feels like the mid-'70s. "The campaign isn't limited to those type of spots, but if it gets people to think like you did, I've already accomplished half of what I set out to do, which is get your attention," Coskey said. "As you hear and see more pieces, you'll see it's a more balanced campaign, selling exciting play, our customer service and the home-ice advantage [Hitchcock] wants to establish." Via intimidation, of course. And Brashear. Heck, it might even make me a fan again.
