On October 31, 2005 John H. Hoffman Jr., passed away, a retired member of Local #98 I.B.E.W. of Springfield PA, husband of Gertrude nee Carr.
Relatives and friends are invited to his visitation in Monday November 7, 2005, at the Kovacs Funeral Home, Inc., 530 W.
Woodland Avenue, Springfield PA, after 9:00 AM until the time of his memorial service at 11:00 AM. Internment will be private. Donations
in his memory may be made to any Charitable Volunteer Organization in Springfield.
John H. Hoffman Jr., 70, of Springfield, a retired electrician and organist, died Monday at Delaware County Memorial Hospital of a stroke.
After graduating from Springfield High School, Mr. Hoffman completed an apprenticeship with Local 98 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. He was then a union electrician until retiring in 1995. For the last 10 years, he assisted at funerals at Kovacs Funeral Home in Springfield. He was a National Guard veteran and a lifetime member of the Springfield Ambulance Corps.
In 1960 he married Gertrude Carr. They danced every weekend during their seven-year courtship, she said.
Mr. Hoffman played the organ in local taverns and for social events. He was an organist at hockey games at the Spectrum in the 1970s, his wife said, when the Flyers won two Stanley Cups, and he also played for 76ers basketball games. He formerly coached young players for the Blue Line Hockey Club and coached the Suburban Delaware County Women's Softball League. He enjoyed bowling.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Hoffman is survived by daughters Cheryl Hoffman-Jackson, Theresa Bennett, and Laura Hoffman-Crispino; a son, Christopher; and 14 grandchildren. He is also survived by Joseph Warlo, Michael Sullivan, Edward Semelstoys and Judith Starr, whom he and his wife helped raise.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Kovacs Funeral Home, 530 W. Woodland Ave., Springfield, Friends may call at 9 a.m.
