Cardinal Foley

The Bishop of Camden, NJ is among many from the Delaware Valley applauding Pope Benedict XVI's announcement that Archbishop John P.Foley is being elevated to Cardinal in late November in Rome.

Joseph Galante says that on a personal level, Foley is a chocoholic, and loves corny jokes and puns, but is not a big sports fan -- as evidenced by a story from way back:

"He was on a plane with Cardinal Krol and some other people and there was a gentleman there with bright red pants on. Then-Monsignor Foley said to him, 'Why, you look like a Cardinal!' And the gentleman said, 'I am.' And (Foley) said, 'Yeah, right, come on, be serious.' The man was Stan Musial of the St. Louis Cardinals

Flyers alumni Ed Hospodar and his family will be witnessing the formal installing of Cardinal Foley in Rome. Hospodar, a 10-year NHLer and three-time Stanley Cup finalist, and the Foley family ar longtime friends Brought Vatican Alive to U.S. Viewers It has been in the years since 1984 that American television audiences have come to know and feel a special kinship with Cardinal-Elect Foley.

He has demonstrated a wonderful ability to explain many of the intricacies and mysteries of the workings of the Vatican and the Latin mass to an audience that has both Catholics and non-Catholics.

Foley was particularly stellar during the papal conclave of 2005 in which Joseph Alois Ratzinger was elected Pope.
