50 teams hit the ice for
Flyers Cup
The 2009 Flyers Cup hockey
tournament will begin Monday, and 10 Class AAA teams, 20 Class AA teams
and 20 Class A teams will compete for berths for the Pennsylvania Cup to be
held later against the Penguins Cup champions from Western Pennsylvania.
Last year, La Salle won its first Class AAA Flyers Cup championship
since 1998 and third overall with a 4-1 championship game victory over Holy
Ghost Prep.
Conestoga defeated Pennridge, 3-2, for the Class AA title, and West Chester
East knocked off neighboring West Chester Rustin, 4-1, for the 2008 Class A crown.
In the state championships, La Salle ended its season at 30-1-2 by crushing Pine-Richland,
9-1, for the Class AAA crown.
West Chester East's (20-7)
Steve Oriente scored the game-winner with 48 seconds to play in the
third period for a 3-2 victory over Quaker Valley in Class A.
Conestoga (22-6-1) dropped the Class AA game,
3-2, to Greater Latrobe.
