CARDINAL O'HARA

 

The Cardinal O'Hara Lions are ranked first and looking for its first Flyers Cup Championship. The Lions play in the Eastern High School Hockey League..O'Hara has never won the Cup.

 

Coach Bill Swahl is assisted by Dave Peruto, Pat McElhenny and Dave Taylor.

 

The Lions are led by senior Ryan Klingensmith, who is tied with La Salle's Dan Pyne with a tournament leading 2.00 goals against average. Klingensmith leads all goalies with a save percentage of .920.

 

On the offense, freshman forward Sean Coll, who has three points (2 goals, 1 assist. Senior defenseman Tom Newman has three assists. Junior forward Kevin Burke (1-1) , sophomore Jamie Lasher (1-1), sophomore forward Kevin Murray (1-1) and senior defenseman Mac Winchester, (0-2), who all have two points.

 

Senion forward Mike Cauley led the EHSHL with 34 points on 17 goals and 17asssits. The other big goal scorers were freshman forward Rocco Carzo (13) senior forward Frank Cross ((10)

 

They have defeated Monsignor Bonner (6-1) and Holy Ghost Prep (5-3) the Flyers Cup.

 

The Lions are undefeated this season in regular season and playoffs, with a 18-0-4 record.

 

Winning goals: Kevin Murray (against Holy Ghost Prep) and Rocco Carzo (Msgr. Bonner).

 

Winning goalie: Ryan Klingensmith (2 wins).

GERMANTOWN ACADEMY PATRIOTS

 

The Germantown Academy Patriots rank third in the tournament. The Patriots are a Suburban High School Hockey League member. GA has won the Flyers Cup four times (1982, 1983, 1994 and 1995). Malvern Prep has won the most Cups, with six.

 

Gump Whiteside is the Patroits coach with assistants Greg Scott and Anthony Seravalli.

 

Brian O'Neil led GA in scoring with 25 points on nine goals and 16 assists. The other big goal scorers were : sophomore forward Reed Marko, who 13 scores and 17 points. Also scoring big were: junior Jack Oppenheimer (8 goals) and Brennan O'Neill (Brian's twin brother) (8).

 

Goalie Nick Stampone, a junior, ranked fourth in regular season play with a 2.09 goals against average. He had a .896 average percentage.

 

They have defeated Archbishop Carroll (11-5) and La Salle (3-1).

 

The Patroits are 10--1-2 during the regular season and Cup playoffs. The one regular season lost , a 6-3 decision to La Salle.

 

Winning goals: Brennan O'Neill (Archbishop Carroll) and Tom Palmer (La Salle).
