College Hockey Hits A High In Temple - Saint Joseph's Battle


If you were one of the fans at the capacity filled Temple University-Saint Joseph's hockey game recently you witnessed the game at its very best.

Playing for the Delaware Valley Collegiate Hockey Conference Cup, the Owls and St. Joe played a college game that fans will remember for years to come. More than 600 filled the Warwick Ice Arena on Saturday night.

Finbarr O'Connor was ending his 34-year career as coach of the Hawks, while Jamie Sabbatini was ending his first year behind the Temple bench. The Hawks' goalie was Evan Kostka and Jason Walker was the Temple netminder.

O'Connor's Hawks finished the regular season undefeated (11-0-1) , a first in St. Joe history.

The game turned into a great battle.

The contest began with both teams playing end to end hockey and the first period ended as it should, 0-0.

The second period began just as the first and then there was some added tough hitting to the mix. Again, the period ended , 0-0.

What was going to give in the game.

The third period was played with so much grit by both teams and again ended tied, 0-0.

During parts of the game, it was just so loud and other times you could hear a pin drop.

Then in overtime it happened, The Owls connnected on a double deflection to give Temple its third consecutive championship.
